I had an interesting Saturday afternoon. I met grumpyfied vibrant characters worthy of representing an Academic Big Brother household (in a stunning flat located in London Bridge). Each one so ambitious and career minded. What did their communities do during their upbringing to ascertain that each one would turn out so ‘normal’. Coming from a background in both my career and location, I have had a crap education, grown up in a crap area and lived around crap people. I am not suggesting that ''therefore I am crap''. What I am suggesting however is that those people who are not fortunate like me to be given 'gifts, wisdom and inspiration' (and live in a crap area) are unfortunate.
Moreover, the thought of spending an afternoon with ‘normal’ people has never occurred to me. They speak normally, back up what they say normally, meet and greet normally, walk normally and eat normal food. Each one came from such different walks of life with views and opinions so firm and consistent. It is hard to gather if their view represents their character or their character represents their views??
Furthermore, speaking from a background of encouraging dysfunctional people to become ‘normal’ and offer the inspiration and motivation needed for one to aspire, I was actually sitting with a group of people for the whole of Saturday, who HAVE had the encouragement and motivation needed for their own aspirations. And they are doing great?! Again, not to suggest that these people have had 'crap' backgrounds too, but... if they have; how did they manage to excel?
Additionally, if I could store them all in a jam jar and take this jar to my next meeting with potential third-sector fund managers I could change the world! I could say enthusiastically;
‘’Look!! We need more of these people in the world. They were given food, bedding, shelter and an excellent education, providing them with sufficiency and enough confidence to see them through the rest of their lives independently; Lets give every child in the country the same benefits!’’
